Immediate Steps to Take During a Dental Emergency:

SEVERE TOOTHACHE:

  • Rinse your mouth with warm water to clean the area.
  • Gently floss around the tooth to remove any trapped food.
  • Apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek to reduce swelling.
  • Avoid applying aspirin or any painkiller directly to the gum, as it can cause irritation.

KNOCKED-OUT TOOTH:

  • Handle the tooth by the crown (the part you chew with), not the root.
  • Rinse the tooth gently with water if it’s dirty—don’t scrub or remove any attached tissue.
  • Try to place the tooth back in its socket if possible, making sure it’s facing the right way.
  • If you can’t reinsert the tooth, keep it moist by placing it in milk or holding it in your mouth next to your cheek.
  • Seek emergency dental care immediately; time is critical for saving the tooth.

Broken or Chipped Tooth:

  • Save any pieces of the tooth if possible.
  • Rinse your mouth with warm water to clean the area.
  • Apply gauze to any bleeding areas for about 10 minutes or until the bleeding stops.
  • Use a cold compress on the outside of your cheek or lip near the broken tooth to reduce swelling.
  • Contact your dentist as soon as possible for treatment.

LOST FILLING OR CROWN:

  • If a filling falls out, cover the exposed area with dental cement (available at most drugstores) or sugarless gum as a temporary measure.
  • If a crown falls off, try to place it back over the tooth using dental cement or toothpaste to hold it in place.
  • Avoid chewing on the affected side of your mouth until you see your dentist.

Soft Tissue Injuries (Gums, Lips, Tongue, Cheek):

  • Rinse your mouth with a mild saltwater solution.
  • Apply a cold compress to the outside of the mouth, cheek, or lip to reduce swelling.
  • Use gauze or a clean cloth to apply gentle pressure to stop any bleeding.
  • If the bleeding doesn’t stop after 10 minutes or is severe, seek emergency care immediately.

For an Abscess:

  • Rinse your mouth with a saltwater solution several times a day to reduce pain and draw the pus to the surface.
  • Avoid applying heat to the area, as this can spread the infection.
  • Contact your dentist immediately, as an abscess is a serious condition that requires prompt treatment.
